Recommendation by John Torrey:
My name is John Torrey and I am an American university student who visited Tanzania in the summer of 2010. Although I was living in Bagamoyo, I took a one-week trip up to Arusha to visit my good friend, and student at the Professional Tour Guide School, Michael John Uisso. When I arrived in Arusha, Michael introduced me to his good friends Salome Joseph and Leonard Kivuyo who are also studying at the school. These three future tour guides made my time in Arusha amazing - filled with so much fun, learning, friendship, and adventure! Michael, Salome, and Leonard are some of the kindest, friendliest, and most fun people I know. They were incredibly hospitable to me throughout my stay. Michael joked to me that my enjoyment was "his religion," but he certainly acted as though it was! Michael, Salome and Leonard hung out with me throughout my stay, showing me nice places to eat and good places to go in Arusha. My visit with them culminated on the weekend when they took me on a day
hike in the foothills of Mt. Meru and gave me a town tour of Arusha the next day. My three guides had planned out a wonderful Saturday for the four of us. We hiked up into the beautiful hills on the outskirts of the city and went all the way to a remote Maasai village where I had the privilege of entering a Maasai boma and drinking "chai" (tea) with its occupants. My guides told me all about the Maasai culture and lifestyle. It was absolutely fascinating to hear and see the completely different way of life lived by Maasai. I felt very privileged to experience it and to have three wonderful tour guides (one of whom, Leonard, is Maasai himself) teach me about their traditional life. After the Boma, my guides took me hiking through some absolutely beautiful countryside (with striking views of Mt. Meru throughout), up a stream, to an amazing waterfall. The waterfall must have been at least forty meters tall and it was breathtaking to see. My guides explained that the waterfall w
as the source of all the drinking water in Arusha. After hanging out for a while at the falls, we made the long hike home - it had been an incredible day. The next day, Michael, Salome, and Leonard gave me a city tour of Arusha. We saw the Uhuru Torch Monument and my guides told me all about the incredible significance of that place in the history of Tanzania. We went to the nearby museum where I learned a great amount about Tanzanian history. When I had questions, Michael, Salome, and Leonard were able to answer them very well! After the museum we had lunch and then took a trip to an enormous Maasai market. This was fascinating for me to see, and my guides again explained what I was seeing to me and helped me to appreciate how Maasai people live.
I really cannot praise enough the incredibly fun weekend that Michael, Salome, and Leonard created for me. All three of them are so warm, kind, and fun - and they are also wonderfully knowledgeable and did a great job of making the amazing sights around Arusha come alive for me! While we were hiking, for instance, Salome was able to identify and tell me about every bird we saw, and Leonard pointed out various plants that Maasai use in traditional medicine. Michael knows an incredible amount about Tanzanian history and politics, which greatly expanded my perspective on the subject. After having spent a week with them, I count Michael, Salome, and Leonard as dear friends. I very highly recommend all three of them as guides, and as great people to know in general. Being shown around by them made my Arusha stay amazing and I am so very fortunate to have met them. I give them all top marks in guiding skills and I know that they will all become amazing professional tour guides!

Comments: Miss Salome Joseph Muna joined this college with an advantage of being a mature person by having been exposed to some leadership duties and responsibilities at her former employment as an assistant nurse. This gave her a good starting point and no wonder she excelled in Outdoor Leadership & Wilderness Survival Skills. (First Aid). Salome did not waste time in showing her potential. She was among the first pioneers who came forward to record in our new Competence-Based Photographic Commentaries. Her recording proved just how good she is in Presentations, a very vital skill in Tour Guiding. She went ahead making progress in acquiring knowledge and skills. While at PROTS she guided several tourist groups to national parks and scored very high recommendations. See her Blog.
In order to graduate in the Advanced Category, Salome worked on one project – Animal Comprehensive Details and made a great job of it. Her compilation is superb with plenty of details that she will use during her Professional Guiding Duties. Her project is a readable and well arranged compilation.
Salome loves birds and her second project was on Birds Identifications with 321 Species of Birds she can accurately identify – (minimum 300) This proves her potential for becoming a Professional Birding Guide.
Her Information File has about 456 items (minimum 500) and it is well written and arranged alphabetically for easy reference. This makes her an informative guide. All these prove her competence. Her Communication Skills makes her a perfect choice for most customer care tasks.
By her graduation she has attained enough Skills, Knowledge, Attitude and Performance. We highly recommend her.4. Resume/CV:
