Personal Details:

• Mr. Bazil Godfrey joined this college with an advantage of having been exposed to what tourism is all about. He came with vigor ready to take on any challenge the course might provide. At the beginning he was a bit confused as to what lies ahead, but as time went on he was able to gain focus and the progress became smooth. His hopes are high and we are sure he will benefit from the type of training we are offering. His interpersonal skills has improved a great deal, too.

Class Participation:

• Bazil might seem not to be very active in class but he likes to sit back and listen with enough concentration and his understanding is displayed in a smile he displays.
• He is encouraged to talk more and use the class as a starting point to improve his communication skills. Basil speaks very good English and he can take advantage of that.

Related Tasks:

• Bazil has worked moderately on his Related Tasks and he needs to practice the delivery. This will improve his communication skills.

Project:

• This is requirement by the Ministry in order to graduate at an Advanced Level.
  
• Basil has not started on a project, yet and we encourage him to do that as soon as possible.

Info File:

• This is a Note Book to be used as a Reference Tool during his guiding duties. It contains items/info that he might easily forget like Distances, years, names figures and other statistics.
• His Info File is progressing well. He has collected more than 500 items on general information and most of all the items on Outdoor Leadership that provide correct information in case of emergency. This will make his trip more safer. This is great achievement.

Field Trips:

• Basil has not participated in any Field Trip nor has he filed any Field Trip Report.

Tests & Examinations:

1. Birds Identifications – 93%; This is remarkable achievement in Birds Identification and it shows how much potential Bazil has in becoming a Professional Birding Guide.

Evaluation Report.

• Basil has not done any Quarterly Evaluation with our Consultant at Kikatiti Camp or at PROTS. This is very important so as to monitor his pace and progress. We encourage him to do that as soon as he reports back for classes in January 2010. The Evaluation at Kikatiti costs only Tshs. 5,000- for fare, lunch and drinks. The Consultant is fee is 10,000.= which is paid by the college.
  

Star Grading!
We have developed a system that awards students stars for each achievement they accomplish at PROTS. We will publish their efforts, success and future plans. The following are some of the items that may award a star.

• Ambassador Star: Representing PROTS in a Professional way.
• Project Star: Doing a project. One star for every project.
• Organization Star: Organizing an event like a Field Trip.
• Star of Humour: Ability to make jokes.
• Academic Star: Class participation like contributing to Class discussions and asking questions.
• Star of Giving: Making a contributing to the school.
• Star of Volunteering: Quick in taking up any volunteer work.
• Model Star: Being a Role model in utilizing our programs.
• Language Star: Efforts to study and speak Languages fluently.
• Sports Star: Having remarkable interest in one or many sports, like soccer, etc.
• Music Star: Displaying remarkable love to music.
• Field Star: Doing a Remarkable Duty or Chore on Field a Trip.
• Social Star: Displaying remarkable social, interpersonal skills and maturity.

Too bad, Basil has not accomplished any STAR, so far. As time goes on we encourage him to start shining!

Future Plans:

• He plans to become a Professional Tour guide. This does not come on a silver plate, Basil has potential that needs to be tapped and the sooner he starts the better.

3. Comments; Mr. Frank Malisa joined this college knowing what it takes to be a Professional Tour Guide. He got this chance of being sponsored by Carol Freer, a friend he met during his guiding tours on Mt. Kilimanjaro. He has therefore been going on these trips and attending classes on the on and off basis. His absences from classes means he will have to stay longer at PROTS. He must therefore take advantage of these trips to gain experiences and tally them with studies in class.

Hello honey badger! by Frank Malisa

HAVE YOU EVER HEARD ABOUT RATEL (HONEY BARGER)?

This a small that animal weighs about 8.2 kgs but with a lot amazing abilities.

It’s can be identified by its two separation colours which in upper part looks white or grayish sometimes white, its lower part looks black. Such an puzzling choice of colours, too. Lack of external ears is another evidence to identify this animal. It lives in underground dens. It is omnivorous but mostly live on honey. Another wonderful choice of food!

This animal is very brave and strong, its forelegs claws are very strong and sharp. In its life it does not know the name fear “It is totally fearless” Whenever it confronts with any animal it doesn’t matter how huge is the animal. This is amazing courage. Even sometimes it starts a fight with absurd reason . What is even more amazing, when fighting with male animal, its first start attacking the scrotum! What an amazing choice of a soft spot!

Despite of being such crazy, it has got its close friend which they associate together in their life, this friend is the bird called Honey Guide better known as indicator. When the Honey guide find a bee hive/nest somewhere it goes direct to the Ratel den and display a repeated voice of which the Ratel can hear, identify and comes out. When Ratel get out the Honey guide start flying from one tree to another leading the Ratel to the destination while Ratel follows it, walking while looking up. After reaching the destination, the Honey guide display the voice which implies that here we are. Then the Ratel start climbing the tree, when it reaches the beehive it then start fumigating the hive by strong smell, the smell which make the bees to fly from the hive and even other die (???). Others they get real drunk! I don’t how true is this. I have been a Ratel before! Then after, its start scooping out the honey comb and feed on honey while the Honey guide hops down and start feed on honey comb left over. When all get well satisfied, they display the voice which implies thank you, thank u see you next time! And each one goes its own way. You can ask yourself why Rattle doesn’t get stung by the bees. Dense and stiff hairs which cover Rattle’s body protect it from the sting by bees.

Looking in deep at animal’s lives you’ll find a bit is like Human being’s life. Some guys travel to other places so as to see the nature of the places and the attractions found there. When they get in this places they become strangers then they must be guided by somebody who is local in the area because is the one knows well the place. After visiting this places and finish everything at the end of the day the visitors say thank you to the local one by giving some tips for leading them in the place which they don’t know. This is the same as Ratel (Visitor) and Honey guide (Local One). Now you know why I chose to study tour guiding – human honey guide!

NB: There has been a legend that if the person that was led to the beehive by the Honey guide did not leave anything for the bird, next time it lead him to a Rhino! Come with enough honey, guys!
